| Ingenium selected by Hanson for their sustainable, carbon zero EcoHouse built at the British Research Establishment, for OFFSITE2007. London 11-14 June 2007. |
Hanson UK is a major global supplier of heavy building material to the construction sector. Hanson has participated in OFFSITE2007 in partnership with BRE to launch their carbon zero, sustainable EcoHouse. It was designed and built as one of the first houses in the UK to achieve the new Code for Sustainable Housing (zero carbon emissions) and it was awarded Level 4 during the event. The Hanson EcoHouse is one of the first, four houses to be awarded this new government-backed Code.
The design for the carbon zero house included new technologies that would help towards energy savings and monitoring of consumption. A further objective championed by OpenHub (the coordinators for the entire installation of the various systems in the house), is to provide educational content and medical assistance via broadband and control the entire system remotely. OpenHub, in partnership with BRE, have provided broadband connectivity to all the new houses built for OFFSITE2007 with this aim in mind.
Ingenium competed strongly along with other manufacturers to be selected as technology suppliers to the homes at BRE and were chosen by OpenHub to be installed in the Hanson EcoHouse. As the houses will stay up for two years, there will be plenty of time to visit the site.
Monday 11 June was inaugurated by the UK Minister for Housing and Planning, Yvette Cooper MP, followed by a tour of the five houses and a press conference. Over the four day event, OFFSITE received visitors from decision makers across the government, building sector, architects and engineers as well as representation from various press sectors. Seminars were offered for the length of the event related to sustainable housing.
Ingenium believes that technology must be flexible and interoperable and shares the concept as a TAHI member that this can be achieved. Following OpenHub’s philosophy and objectives, Ingenium shares the idea that educational content and medical assistance provided through broadband would make a great difference in people’s lives in the future. The technology is ready and with the help of the press to get the message out there, this concept could fast become a reality.
Ingenium also believes that smart home technology can lead to savings in energy consumption and carbon emissions and therefore feels that the Code for Sustainable Homes might want to consider taking smart home technologies into account when awarding points for carbon zero, sustainable homes.
In the Hanson EcoHouse, there are Ingenium controls for the lighting, heating, skylight control, sensors, alarms and their full colour touch screen is connected to a Siedle video-entry phone, both represented by Smart3, Ingenium’s Distributor for the UK. The entire installation and engineering has been supervised and designed by the highly qualified and experienced engineers from OpenHub.
Ingenium was present the entire four days of the OFFSITE2007 event, as was their Distributor for the UK, Smart3. Both companies saw this as a perfect opportunity to make their partnership formal by signing an agreement on the TAHI stand.
